Video Solution Breaks Down Barriers
In 1997, schools in the Fox Valley region of Wisconsin evaluated how emerging communications technologies could improve the educational experience of their students. KSCADE, an acronym for K-12 Schools/College Alliance for Distance Education, came into existence, and today, thanks to Charter Business Networks, teachers and students at 38 schools are using broadcast-quality, interactive video to learn from each other.

The KSCADE network, designed, implemented and managed by Charter Business Networks, is the largest distance education network in the country using international standards-based MPEG-2 video compression and ATM switching technology.

Now, each day in the Fox Valley, students at schools miles apart from each other come together in one virtual classroom to study Japanese, astronomy, animal sciences and dozens of other subjects not previously available to them.

However, KSCADE's benefits go beyond the classroom curriculum. Says Sandra Dykes, an agricultural science instructor who was the Wisconsin state teacher of the year in 1996 and a Kohl Fellowship winner in 1995. "KSCADE breaks down social barriers and broadens the students' experience. It's really neat to watch how kids from different schools interact and learn from one another."

By overcoming physical distances and the challenges of limited resources, KSCADE has become a powerful learning tool that expands the educational opportunities available to students in the Fox Valley.
